Why the Chennai rate looks different from the national benchmark
Two things make the Chennai number on a shop board look unlike the figure on this page, and only one of them is a price difference.
The first is the unit. Chennai does not buy gold by the gram or by ten grams — it buys by the sovereign, called pavan locally, which is 8 grams of 22K. When a showroom on Usman Road quotes “one sovereign”, that is the number being discussed. On 22 October 2026 the Chennai 22K sovereign was quoted at ₹1,05,880, against ₹13,235 per gram. This page publishes per-gram and per-10-gram figures because that is how IBJA publishes; to get the sovereign price you will actually be quoted, multiply the 22K per-gram rate above by eight.
The second is who publishes. Most Chennai jewellers work from a rate circulated each morning by The Jewellers and Diamond Traders’ Association, Madras (MJDTA) rather than reading the IBJA benchmark directly.
What that does not reliably produce is a standing Chennai premium. Comparing published board rates on 22 October 2026, Chennai 22K and Kerala 22K both stood at ₹13,235 per gram — identical to the rupee. Any gap between a local board rate and the national benchmark is small, moves around, and is not something we would advise planning a purchase around.
For that reason we publish the national IBJA benchmark for Chennai with no premium added. If you want the MJDTA board figure, check it directly — the two should be close, and we would rather you knew which one you were looking at.
Where Chennai actually buys gold
Gold retail in Chennai is concentrated in T. Nagar (Thyagaraya Nagar) to a degree that has no real parallel in other Indian cities. The showrooms cluster along Usman Road and North Usman Road, spilling into Ranganathan Street and Pondy Bazaar.
What distinguishes the Chennai product mix is temple jewellery — heavy, high-relief 22K work in traditional South Indian forms: nagas, mango malai, kasu malai, antique-finish pieces made for weddings and classical dance. This matters commercially, not just aesthetically. Intricate handwork carries materially higher making charges than machine-made chain or plain bangles, and a large share of what is sold in T. Nagar is exactly that kind of work. A quoted making-charge percentage in Chennai therefore spans a much wider band than the “10–14%” figure that gets quoted for Indian jewellery generally.
When Chennai buys, and when it does not
Tamil Nadu's gold calendar is driven by the Tamil month more than by the Gregorian one, and it produces a genuinely unusual annual pattern: the city has a well-defined discount season.
Aadi (mid-July to mid-August) is traditionally avoided for weddings and other major ceremonies. Rather than go quiet, retail inverts — the Aadi Thallupadi sale season is one of the most commercially active stretches of the Tamil Nadu retail year, because families buy ahead for ceremonies that will happen once Aadi ends. If you are going to see genuine promotional offers on making charges in Chennai, this is when.
Thai (mid-January to mid-February), immediately after the Pongal harvest festival, is the opposite: the peak muhurtham wedding window. Demand is high, discounting is thin, and making charges hold firm.
Layered on top are the national gold-buying dates — Akshaya Tritiya in April or May and Dhanteras in October or November — when footfall spikes across India for a day or two.
What to check before you pay, in Chennai specifically
- Get both numbers. Ask for the per-gram rate as well as the sovereign rate, and check that one is eight times the other. It is the simplest way to confirm you and the counter are talking about the same thing.
- Ask how value addition is quoted. Chennai bills commonly express making as "VA" (value addition), sometimes as a percentage and sometimes as rupees per gram. For heavy temple work the two can differ substantially — ask which is being applied and get it written on the estimate.
- Ask whether wastage is separate. Some bills carry wastage in addition to making; others fold it in. This is the single most common source of a final figure higher than the buyer expected.
- Check the HUID before payment, not after. Every hallmarked piece carries a six-character code you can verify yourself in the BIS CARE app. Ask for a loupe; counters keep them. Our hallmark and HUID guide walks through the check.
- Ask the buy-back terms for temple jewellery before buying it. Making charges on intricate work are rarely recoverable on exchange, and the heavier the handwork, the larger the amount at stake.
