What the number at the top of this page is

It is the IBJA benchmark — the reference rate published by the India Bullion and Jewellers Association, recorded twice on each trading day. It is not a quotation from any particular shop, and it is not what you will pay at the counter. It is the number most of the Indian trade starts from before adding its own costs. If you want the arithmetic and the fallbacks we use when the feed is unavailable, that is set out in how we calculate our rates.

What moves the gold rate in India

Four things, in roughly this order of day-to-day importance.

The international price

Gold is a globally traded commodity priced in US dollars, and India is a price taker. When the international price moves overnight, the Indian benchmark has usually moved with it by the time it is published the next morning. Almost every large single-day change you will see on this site traces back to this.

The rupee

Because the metal is priced in dollars and sold here in rupees, the exchange rate matters as much as the metal. If the dollar price of gold is flat and the rupee weakens, the rupee price of gold still rises. This is why the Indian rate sometimes climbs on a day when international headlines say gold fell — the two are measuring different things.

Import duty

Customs duty on imported gold feeds straight into the domestic benchmark. When the rate changes, the Indian price steps the same day, whether or not anything happened internationally. The most recent change raised the effective duty on gold imports to 15% with effect from 13 May 2026, through a combination of basic customs duty and the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (CBIC Customs Notifications 15/2026 and 16/2026, dated 12 May 2026). Duty is revised from time to time, in the Union Budget or by notification between budgets, so treat any figure you read elsewhere as needing a date attached to it.

Domestic demand

Wedding and festival buying is the driver most often named in gold-rate coverage, and it is real — but it shows up mainly in what jewellers charge over the benchmark, in making charges and in how much they are willing to discount, rather than in the benchmark itself. We do not model a festival effect on the published rate, and we would be sceptical of a site that claims to.

Why every city on this page shows the same rate

Because we apply no city premium. Earlier versions of this site added small estimated adjustments for some cities; we removed them in October 2026 because we could not substantiate them against published local board rates. Every city page now shows the national benchmark, unadjusted. The city pages differ in their local market detail — which association sets a local board rate, which market you would actually buy in, what the seasonal pattern looks like — not in the headline figure. The reasoning is written up in full on the how we calculate page.

What this rate does not include

Three things, and together they are the gap between the number above and your bill: making charges, which vary by design and by shop; GST; and any wastage billed separately. The calculator in the sidebar will give you an estimate once you put in a weight and a making-charge percentage, and what you will actually pay at a jeweller walks through a worked example. Before you buy, it is worth knowing how to read the hallmark on the piece as well — that is covered in the BIS hallmark and HUID guide.

How to read this page

The large figure at the top is 24K per 10 grams. The three tabs beside it switch the whole page between 24K, 22K and 18K — the weight cards underneath update with them, so you can read off a price for the weight you are actually buying rather than doing the arithmetic yourself.

The city table shows 24K and 22K side by side for the five cities we publish. The chart below it plots the national 22K rate over the last ten trading days; longer ranges, with every recorded day listed, are on the gold price history page. Silver has its own page.

The timestamp in the bar at the very top tells you when the rate you are looking at was recorded, and which session it came from. On weekends and market holidays it will show the last trading day — gold does not have a new Indian benchmark on a day the market did not poll.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is today's gold rate in India? ▾
Today's national 24K gold rate and 22K rate are shown in the price table above — updated twice daily from IBJA.
How often are gold rates updated? ▾
Twice on each trading day, Monday to Friday, after IBJA's morning and afternoon publications. The exact time the rate you are reading was recorded is shown in the bar at the top of every page. On weekends and market holidays you will see the last trading day's rate.
Does the gold rate include GST? ▾
No. All rates exclude GST (3%) and making charges. Use the calculator on any city page for the final jewellery price.
Why do other websites show a different gold rate? ▾
Differences of a few percent between gold-rate sites at the same moment are normal. Sites use different reference prices — the IBJA benchmark, live MCX futures, or rates collected from local jewellers that already include a retail margin — and they update at different times of day. We set out our sources in full.
Why is the rate the same for Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata and Kochi? ▾
Because we apply no city premium. We removed the estimated premiums this site used to carry in October 2026 after we could not substantiate them against published local board rates. Where a local jewellers' association publishes its own board rate, the relevant city page points you at it.
What is the difference between 24K, 22K and 18K? ▾
Purity. 24K is 99.9% gold and is used for coins and bars; 22K is 91.67% and is the usual standard for Indian jewellery; 18K is 75% and is common in studded and lighter pieces. The lower karats are priced by their gold content, and the hallmark on the piece will carry the corresponding number — 999, 916 or 750. The hallmark guide explains how to check it.
Does the gold price change on weekends? ▾
The international price keeps moving, but there is no new Indian benchmark on a day the market does not poll. On Saturdays, Sundays and market holidays this site shows the last trading day's rate, and says so in the timestamp.
Can I use these rates to value gold I already own? ▾
As a starting point, yes — the benchmark tells you what the metal content is worth. What a buyer will actually offer is usually less: making charges are generally not recoverable, and the piece will be assessed for purity first. The hallmark guide covers what to expect when selling or exchanging.
